A Frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure that is simple and consists of removing part of or altering one or more frenum (plural of frenum). A frenum is a small piece of tissue or muscle that links two parts of the mouth that move, e.g., the lip and the gum (labial frenum), or the tongue and the floor of the mouth (lingual frenum).
Essential Characteristics and Indications of Procedure
- Lingual Frenectomy (Tongue-Tie) : This treats the condition of ankyloglossia (tongue-tie: the short or tight lingual frenum). When untreated, it can disrupt proper:
- Breastfeeding (latching/sucking).
- Development of articulation (speech).
- Swallowing mechanics.
- Labial Frenectomy (Lip-Tie): The procedure, which removes the frenum that connects the upper lip to the gum between the two front teeth, is commonly referred to as a Lip-Tie. Too thick or low-lying labial frenum may:
- Create a great space between the front teeth (diastema).
- Disturb oral hygiene, which predisposes to gum recession.
- Obstructs the orthodontic therapy outcome.
- Procedure: A frenectomy is usually carried out with a traditional scalpel or, with increasing popularity, a soft tissue laser. The laser procedure is commonly favoured because it is faster and causes less bleeding (due to immediate cauterisation). In many cases, local anaesthesia is not necessary or minimal, especially in infants.
Why Choose Dr Sujeet's Dental Care & Orthodontic Centre for a Frenectomy?
- Laser Precision : Laser technology is used to achieve virtually painless surgery, minimal recovery time and instant functional restoration.
- Functional Focus : For infants, the primary focus should be on achieving latching in the short term. In older patients, the emphasis is on resolving speech problems or ensuring mouth alignment is a successful part of the orthodontic process.
- Quality Care : We are highly specialised and trained, ensuring that the procedure is performed with precise anatomical accuracy, which provides the best results and a reliable recovery.
