Tongue-Tie Removal, or technically called Lingual Frenectomy, is a simple, minor operation to part a short, thick, or tight band of tissue (the lingual frenum) binding the base of the tongue to the mouth floor. This is referred to as Ankyloglossia. In cases where the frenum is a limiting factor on tongue movements, it can disrupt critical processes, particularly in babies.
Essential Characteristics and Indications of Procedure
- Primary Indication : The principal cause of the procedure is to work on functional problems brought about by short movement of the tongue, especially in the following areas:
- Breastfeeding : Infants with a fibrotic frenum are unable to engage in an efficient latch, which results in poor weight gain, nipple pain for the mother, and inefficient feeding.
- Oral Health : The inability to brush off food debris from the teeth and gums can predispose a person to tooth decay and lead to gum recession in adulthood.
- Procedure : Frenectomy is a relatively painless and minimally invasive procedure. A soft tissue laser is used to release the frenum carefully, most often by us. The laser has better advantages:
- No Sutures : This method instantly closes blood vessels, eliminating the need for stitches.
- Minimal Pain : The procedure is relatively quick and precise, which means that infants have little to no pain (in many cases, no injection is required), and older patients may experience only a few instances of discomfort.
